REVIEW: E-40 at Windmill Cove
REVIEW: E-40 at Windmill Cove

It’s been a little more than two years since E-40 headlined a show at Stockton’s biggest venue - the 10,000-seat Stockton Arena. He was a national pop star with a hit single as and the face of hyphy, which was hyped to be the next big thing in music.

Remember hyphy?

The subculture has since fizzled and so has E-40’s pop stardom. But that didn’t stop fans from filling the Windmill Cove resort July 12 for an unheralded but lively performance by the rapper. His managers even denied he was going to perform at the show, which was part of a little-advertised “Increase the Peace” event.

Others on the bill included Hersh and Marquita, Mafiyo, Uka Celeb, Cali B, Johnny Rockz, Déjà vu, Suga Free, Lady Live of Sacramento, Kreep, G Will, Mr. Goodbar, Bueno, Doja Clik and poet Supanova.

E-40 entered the scene around 8:45 PM and was met by the crowd of screaming fans. He and his crew gathered for a small prayer circle before taking the stage with his dancers. They shook their dreds and got stupid.

Opening with “Drippin’ Like Water,” E-40 captured the crowd and held them the entire performance with engaging moves. He had no quarrels with shaking fans’ hands and getting them pumped up.

Some people might have expected that a fight would break out but the artists and fans had no funk that they couldn’t contain with a little bit of self-control and Third Eye Patrol. E-40 came and delivered a lively performance that satisfied fans.

As readers know, I am the editor of 209Vibe as well as the Record's local music reporter. E-40's management told me July 1 that the rapper was not playing Stockton and asked me to take down the MySpace posting about the show. Yesterday, I spoke again with E-40's management, who said you did finally contact them, but it wasn't until after July 1. So you didn't have E-40 under contract until after July 1 for a show that happened on July 12. Typically, for a show like this, the artist should be under contract at least two months in advance so you can promote it for at least one month. You need a month to ensure your audience is aware of the show. That's how professional promoters operate. Of course, you could promote the show before your paperwork is done - which is what happened here. But then, again, you take a big risk in screwing yourself, the artist and the fans, as stated below. In early 2006, promoters hyped an E-40 concert at the arena, getting everyone excited - only to cancel at the last minute because they didn't have a contract with the arena. The same thing happened with your Snoop Dogg show at Ralph White's skating rink, Miss Pearl - Snoop's appearance was hyped, but he wasn't under contract and he didn't show. Again, both you and the fans paid the price. You think you would've learned. Perhaps the July 12 E-40 show was hyped on KWIN or KHOP - but I listen to KWIN, and I didn't hear anything. Neither did the fans who have said they were surprised to learn E-40 was in Stockton after the fact. When shows are promoted well on those stations - and throughout the community - it builds a great buzz. There was no buzz around this show. There certainly was no "aggressive electronic and print media campaign." Those of you who read 209Vibe regularly know a lack of professionalism is one of my pet peeves. Stockton has a talented music scene and many music fans who deserve the chance to check out great concerts. For years, however, local fans and musicians have been treated like second-class citizens and offered crumbs by promoters and officials with a lack of understanding about how a professional music scene successfully operates. Today, Stockton is on the verge of something big, and it has the venues to become a major entertainment destination. The second-class treatment needs to stop. And it will only stop when we directly address unprofessionalism. A few final points: For future reference, E-40's management has asked me to post their contact info on this blog, which I will do once I'm back in the office this morning. Lastly, I understand proceeds from this benefit concert will be donated to Hardwood Palace, a teen club in Rocklin (http://www.myspace.com/clubstepup). This club might be a great venue for teens in Rocklin. But why, Miss Pearl, are the proceeds not going to a charity in Stockton, where the show was held? Stockton has one of the worst violent crime rates in California, and there are organizations in the city trying desperately to "Increase the Peace" that need your help. Hope's Angels certainly could use the support, as could the Boys and Girls Clubs of Stockton, which runs the Podesto IMPACT Teen Center. Why isn't the money for your Stockton "Increase the Peace" concert helping to "Increase the Peace" in Stockton?

And this is Ms.Pearl of MaddPadd Productions and im not from Stockton but when I had bussiness there before i thought you were from the news paper called the the Record of Stockton, not Vibe. And Suga Free & E-40 were present to perform and in contract, and on the flier, assumption are not always correct and we appreciate your positive input, we wish you had attended this successful event, beacuse then you would have really had a great cover story to print for Stockton readers that is more accurate, less negative, and more supportive, however it doesnt change the positive impact the increse movement left in Stockton. Sincerely Me, You and people like us incresing the peace in effort to erase hate. Ms.Pearl CEO of MaddPadd Productions

"Your participation in this event will enable you to reach over 500,000 households through an aggressive electronic and print media campaign featuring radio ads, on air interviews, volumes of print ads..." None of that was true.

A little late, don't you think? That would have been a great press release to send out a month before the event - which is typically when we're notified about events such as these. Unfortunately, I never received one, nor did anyone at the paper I work in - which is the only major media source in Stockton. Nor did we receive any follow-up calls asking if we had received the press release. The show was never posted on the 209Vibe.com calendar - a free service that most local promoters take advantage of, at this point - or any other local online calendar. Did this show even have radio support? About six weeks ago, Miss Pearl called our courts reporter (I'm not sure why she called him) about potentially bringing E-40 to Stockton. I told her what I'd tell anyone throwing a similar show - it's very difficult to throw a mainstream rap concert in Stockton. You have to jump through hoops with the city and guarantee a large, expensive security force. The city also will require a sizable police presence, which isn't cheap. (Makes you wonder - was the show kept quiet so Stockton officials wouldn't notice it was happening? I would certainly understand why, but it didn't help show promotion.) When I saw the MySpace posting, I called E-40's management - who said that he wouldn't be playing the show and asked that I remove the comment from my MySpace. Of course, the promoter could've just paid some guy who said he was a friend of E-40 and that he could deliver the rapper for cheap. That worked really well when Snoop Dogg was booked for Ralph White's skating rink. If E-40's management doesn't know about the show, that means the promoter don't have an official contract with him, and his management isn't going to use their considerable resources to promote the show. If he doesn't have a contract, he doesn't need to appear. Even if he does, if the promoter isn't working through his management, then the star probably isn't getting paid what he's worth. And the promoter is left holding the bag if he doesn't show up (see the aforementioned Snoop Dogg show). So let's review who can get screwed when you don't book a show through an artist's management: 1. You, because you have no real guarantee the artist will appear; 2. The artist, who might not get his or her money; 3. Since this was some sort of benefit, the organizations you were supposed to raise money for, as here could've been a much bigger crowd, because 3. The fans get screwed out of hearing about and attending a professionally-produced show. A lot more people would've liked to attend this concert. But the response I typically get, when I tell people about it, was "E-40 was in Stockton?!?!?!?" - Ian Hill / 209Vibe editor
