OK, so the show started late. And yes, the crowd was small. Still, that didn't prevent The Yankee Racers, Polar State and Young/Lost Ones from treating fans to a fun night of indie music July 31 at the Blackwater Café in Stockton.
The Yankee Racers made up for the late start with humorous verbal interludes that served as introductions to songs. Numbers like “Too Good to be Gone” and "Eyes like Yours" had the audience leaning forward to make sure they caught the band's sound. But lead singer Andrew Hemans felt he had to apologize for the performance.
“We're playing the easy set list because we have never practiced since our last show," he said.
Polar State followed with a unique stage presence that caught fans' attention. Every band member had a mustache. After opening with an instrumental, the band launched into "Expedition," which got the crowd on their feet and dancing. The set closed with "We Broke Bread," which was met with applause.
It didn't take Young/Lost Ones much time to set up for their headlining set, as three of its members also are in Polar State. There is, however, a distinct difference in the sound and makeup of the two bands. Young/Lost Ones has two vocalists, and the band blended folk and indie with a pop beat which gets everyone off their chairs. The band ended with the song “You’ll Always Find Apples."
