A Little Lady With A Big Voice!
Posted December 1 at 12:29 PM
Ever hear the term great things come in small packages?
Well Chaka Khan is definitely the embodiment of that saying. Despite her lack of height, Khan’s voice is by far larger than life. Her contralto voice could be heard coming from the Bob Hope Theater on Saturday night, and I’m sure you didn’t even need a ticket to hear it (you just had to be in the area and listen).
As soon as she got on stage, the crowd was in a funky soul frenzy. Her band, while on the smaller side, was tight and set the grooves down perfectly for Khan to simply wail on. Khan hit notes closing on the range where glass breaks and dogs’ ears prick up!
Her backup singers laid down a cool three-part harmony that added just the right amount of soul. The songs of the night spanned Khan’s prolific Grammy-studded career. However, the bulk shied away from her jazzier side however and focused mainly on her pop-funk side.
One highlight of the night was when she sang a soul Happy Birthday to a friend in the crowd and he joined her on stage!
The show was kicked off by Stockton’s very own Queen Emily. She has a great voice, but without a band to back her up (it was only a soundtrack), it felt almost like we were on the set of “Who Wants To Be A Star”.
All in all, it was a groovin’ evening of funky proportions. The next time someone like Chaka Khan comes to town, the Bob Hope should look to invest in removable seats, because Stockton is ready to hop on the good foot and do the bad thing!
