Birthday show

Anna Colavita wanted more than just cake and ice cream for her birthday last year. She chose to celebrate by helping organize a small music festival featuring local bands.

She thought it would draw her friends, family and co-workers but was surprised when 150-200 music fans attended.

“It just became way bigger,” said Colavita, 25.

And it most likely will be even bigger this year, as two of the bands on the bill — The Second String Quintet and The Icarus Jones Collective — have attracted hundreds to recent shows.

Pretty Mama and the Not So Hots and The Outlaw Dance Society also are on the bill for the free event, which starts at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 at Royce Farms BBQ, 10880 N. Highway 99. It’s sponsored by 209Vibe.

Fans are encouraged to bring blankets and wear their favorite music T-shirts. Cat and dog food, leashes and toys will be collected for the Delta Humane Society. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

The fans share a love of the music that builds friendships and a laid-back attitude. Colavita said those who attend this year’s Bananafest can expect “just an all-around good feeling.”

That feeling begins with the bands, who are all talented musicians and friends who perform together regularly. Colavita’s boyfriend is Second String Quintet member Snap Jackson, who also helped organize the festival.

“I think we have one of the best music scenes coming up right now,” Colavita said. “We have a lot of talent, a lot of young talent that I love. It’s everything from folk music to hip-hop to feel-good, fun music.” - Ian Hill / 209Vibe editor
